Upcoming NewEthic Announcements!
xOlympic Lifting Workshop! 3 wk Workshop on bettering your Olympic Lifting. The first Week 9/21 @ 730 pm and 9/24 @noon will be intro to Oly Lifting, going over the SNATCH, CLEAN, and JERK. The following two weeks will be open to everyone not specifically a beginner to join and clean up/gain confidence in these lifts. This class will be coached by myself and Ed and will be $110 for the full three weeks or $70 for the full two weeks after intro or $20 drop in for any class. (Sliding scale, if you can't make this pricing work, let us know! We will figure it out!)
 
 xPokemon Workout! 9/3 This will be an outside workout around part of the lake by the gym. We will walk/jog/run from pokestop to pokestop (non are more than 3 blocks apart, I hate running and it was ok for me but we are super down with walking groups and running groups so no one feels excluded) Attached is the flyer for the Pokemon workout where all yall are kickin it with little pocket monsters, I super hope no one is offended by being in this! Also, this workout is open if someone doesn't play but wants to party AND to those who don't already workout here, so bring friends! Lastly, if you're a hater you're welcome to workout during open gym during this time.

Questions we answered!

- how do you, as personal trainers, talk to new or potential clients who voice weight loss as one of their main goals? On one hand, there are so many fitness professionals who have made their names on weight loss mongering, yet on the other hand, the pursuit of weighing less doesn't necessarily produce more happy people... So how do you convince people that there's nothing wrong with them no matter what size they are in at the beginning of working with you, while encouraging them to work out anyway for health, strength and overall badassness?

- As someone with an eating disordered and substance abuse background, I understand that it's not all about weight and I'm trying to focus on non scale victories. This is a daily struggle. Feeling my soft body jiggle while I work out is triggering. Do you have ideas for softening my mindset around this phase of recovery?

It's well known that people who take anti anxiety or depression meds (and others) gain weight. I consider myself a mental health advocate, feminist, healthy living supporter - well informed. And yet, I never see a conversation around how weight gain/loss and medication/mental health. Is this something you encounter with clients? Do you feel informed enough to speak to this topic? I'm struggling to take off the weight I gained through the injury, and wonder how medication has impacted my body and it's ability to self regulate.

 Today's show is a Q & A from you all! This is a part 1 as we got so many questions!

- Lately, I've been struggling with my nutrition. I've been feeling really anxious about my food, because I want to be in a certain weight class for powerlifting, and I need to lose some pounds to get there, but I'm struggling with dropping the few pounds and constantly being in a deficit. I want to take time off from obsessively tracking my food, but every time I do, I dive into a pit of "fuck it" and eat crap. Then I gain weight, and get further away from my goal. My next meet is in October and I feel like I shouldn't lose weight right before the meet. Any advice?

- Lacy, as an anxious passenger, how much better is Oregon than California? I too am an anxious passenger, and driver, and the LA area was probably the worst experience of my life, especially as a semi truck driver. Had to quit that job just because they always sent me to NY and LA.

- How do you deal with periods of time where you have very low energy? I've been having a tough time feeling up to anything lately but not doing the things I want to do and the things I need to do is makes it worse.

High Protein Pesto Meal Prep (The recipe was Half a container or wild wood sprouted silken tofu, 1 clamshell of stemmed Basil, about 2 Tbs Cashews, Nooch, a 2 inch by 2 inch by 1 inch chunk of smoked cheese from a local vegan butcher shop, Juice of two lemons and Zest of 1 Lemon, Pink Salt and Fresh Pepper. So no oil, silken tofu and cashews made it rich and creamy but hella protein and super super low fat but this stuff tastes good enough to be in any restaurant menu.)

Q: Body dysmorphia question: is it inappropriate to ask someone you trust to asses your progress if you are aiming to lose weight/build muscle? How do you know when to you are "done" getting in shape? Should our goals be completely NON-aesthetic?

Q: How did you get into lifting? How can other people get into lifting? Is 1-on-1 coaching the best option for a beginner?

Q: I'm finishing up grad school. I'm starting to get teaching gigs all around town and I'm applying for grants related to implementing yoga and mindfulness in public schools. Im teaching international students about ahimsa philosophy in Delhi this summer.... I just subbed for a yoga celebrity.... So why do I struggle with feeling like I'm not good enough still? Why do I feel like there is a lack in my life?

Q: I want to be a health/wellness coach! I'm in no way qualified to do this. 😂 But I've learned so much over the past several years and have built a passion for fitness and plant based eating. I still struggle with not having that "perfect" body and the perceptions of others. Where do I start and how do I logistically and legitimately help others? Do I need to go back to school? How do I get others to trust and take me seriously? How do you reach those that say they want to better themselves but are hesitant to take any steps?

Haters will hate, especially online. It's a fact of life, am I right?! We live in a new world where, not only do folks think it's ok to judge our bodies and appearance but that they also feel free to make those judgements without compassion or thoughtfulness online. In the aftermath of the hate thrown towards Holly and others after this post and the response post, we got serious about some of the body issues we, as a collective whole, seem to feel a whole lot of wasted shame on: cellulite, stretch marks, and body hair. These are things our bodies do totally naturally, and mostly your ownership of any of these conditions is basically decided by your genetics. We also talk about shame, how shame hates fun, and is wicked good at ruining an awesome time.

1) drink lemon water in the AM

2) sleep enough (if you can)

3) dont do things that dont fulfill you

4) have good boundaries

5) charge enough for what you do

6) put yourself in uncomfortable situations now and again (for personal growth)

7) treat yourself like a friend 8) write affirmations

 

Holly's

1. Everything represents your integrity. Don't let the little things slip, stay in integrity with your word and with yourself.
2. Value yourself and others will value you.
3. Dive in, full force, and trust yourself. Scary things won't get less scary (or logical, sometimes) such as starting your biz, or following your dreams, setting huge goals, or starting a family but that doesn't mean you shouldn't go full into it, and trust yourself to rise to the challenges.
4. Eat enough to fuel your life. Eat enough whole foods to make your body feel good, eat enough of your cravings to make your emotional head feel good, and notice when something feels bad/good then be willing to adjust.
5. Be loved. You deserve your friends love, you deserve folks admiration, you deserve your lovers adoration, you are worth everything everyone around you thinks you're worth. Unless they treat you like poop, then delete them out of your life.
6. Have a small list of folks that matter. Then STRICTLY live by only allowing what they say or criticize matter. All the online haters? Not on the list. Oh and you CAN just delete negative comments or messages then forget about them.
7. Recognize what you need, and give yourself permission to do what you need.

Current itinerary: Donut Friend (Meet and Greet with Us and the Vegan Warrior Princesses Attack), Workout with Dizzle Rivera either 10 am or 11 am (it will be announced shortly), Post Workout Brunch at either Cross Roads or Little Pine, Hiking in the Malibu Hills Abandoned Mansions (Originally the Sunken City Trail but it's to far away) then early dinner! Please reach out to us and let us know if you'll be joining us specifically for the workout! We can't wait to meet you!
